Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has been named in the Denmark squad for next month’s internationals against Northern Ireland and Lithuania, as national boss Brian Riemer throws his support behind the veteran shot-stopper.

The 38-year-old’s inclusion comes despite a torrent of criticism following his last outing for Denmark, a Nations League clash with Portugal. Schmeichel was the subject of a deeply controversial article in the Danish press, which included cruel comparisons and a vile jibe likening his movement to a child with polio. The piece also referred to the former Premier League winner as “plump”.
The reaction was swift and strong. The Danish PFA condemned the comments, describing them as a deeply offensive and unacceptable personal attack. Many pointed out Schmeichel’s bravery on the night in question – he continued playing through extra time with a fractured shoulder to ensure his side, who had already used all their substitutes, weren’t left a man down.

Despite the noise, Riemer has stood by his man, selecting Schmeichel once again as Denmark look to bounce back in upcoming fixtures. His inclusion speaks to the respect he still commands within the national setup.
Also returning to the squad is former Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley. Now at Brighton, O’Riley’s season has been stop-start, but he heads into the international break on a high after scoring in a 4-1 win over Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs at the weekend.
