Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel was a noticeable absentee from training on Friday, raising questions over his availability for this weekend’s Scottish Premiership clash against Motherwell.

According to Sky Sports, the Celtic No.1 was not involved in the Lennoxtown session, and SNS photographers also failed to capture any images of the veteran shot-stopper in action.

At this stage, it remains unclear whether Schmeichel has picked up an injury or if Brendan Rodgers has simply chosen to rest him ahead of Sunday’s match at Fir Park.

If Schmeichel is unavailable, Viljami Sinisalo could be handed his first start for the Hoops. The Finland international joined Celtic in the summer but has been limited to a back-up role since his arrival.

With Joe Hart departing last season, Schmeichel has been the undisputed No.1, but Sinisalo—who arrived from Aston Villa—may now get a long-awaited chance between the sticks.

More details regarding Schmeichel’s status are expected to be revealed later this afternoon when Rodgers addresses the media in his pre-match press conference.

For now, Celtic fans will be left waiting to see if their first-choice goalkeeper will be fit to feature—or if a new face will be handed the gloves for a crucial league match.

UPDATE: 16.00: Brendan Rodgers has provided an explanation, easing fears.
