Kasper Schmeichel has expressed a long-standing connection and admiration for the club as he steps into his role as the team’s new number one.

The 37-year-old Danish international, who recently replaced the retiring Joe Hart, shared his sentiments about Celtic during his first press conference in the Hoops.

Schmeichel recounted the influences that drew him toward Celtic over the years, noting the tenure of fellow Danish internationals Thomas Gravesen and Morten Wieghorst at the club.

The goalkeeper’s affinity for Celtic grew stronger in recent years, particularly as he followed Joe Hart’s tenure with the club. Schmeichel’s own experiences in Scotland during his youth also left a lasting impression.

He said: “There was always something with Celtic for some reason,” on Celtic TV.

“Recently we had Thomas Gravesen and Morten Wieghorst playing here.

“It is just a club that always appealed to me in some kind of way. And particularly these last few years with Joe coming here I followed it a lot closer than I ever did.

“Having played here as a youngster you get a real impression. You could see back then it wasn’t Falkirk getting headlines it was Celtic so you knew what the club was and the size of the club.”

Schmeichel’s move to Celtic reunites him with Brendan Rodgers, under whom he enjoyed considerable success at Leicester City, including an FA Cup win in 2021. This reunion is poised to be a pivotal chapter in Schmeichel’s career as he brings his extensive experience that some of the younger group can lean on at Celtic.
