For the first time since 1998, the Tartan Army will be packing their bags for football’s biggest stage after a dramatic 4-2 win for Scotland over Denmark at Hampden Park.

On a night loaded with pressure, noise, and raw emotion, a Celtic favourite delivered the defining moment. Kieran Tierney produced an extraordinary strike in added time to seal Scotland’s place at the 2026 finals. He did it in poetic fashion, beating Celtic teammate Kasper Schmeichel with a hit the goalkeeper had no chance of stopping.

The match was chaotic, frantic, and unforgettable. The home side started like a team who understood the magnitude of the moment. Scott McTominay sent the crowd into meltdown inside three minutes with a spectacular overhead finish. Denmark fought back, forced Scotland into deep defensive phases, and levelled from the spot.

Lawrence Shankland then restored their advantage before Patrick Dorgu struck to make it 2-2. Hampden felt the nerves, and the shadow of glorious failure was looming. The sense of opportunity slipping away hung over the ground. It was familiar territory for Scotland. It would have been the perfect moment to crumble.

But this team did not crumble.

Tierney stepped into the spotlight when the game demanded a hero. As the clock ticked into added time, the defender set himself, and unleashed a strike that flew past Schmeichel. It was hit with intent, confidence, and belief. The moment he connected, everyone inside Hampden knew exactly where it was going. Straight into the corner, and straight into Scottish football history.

Kenny McLean then added a fourth to spark a full-stadium eruption, scoring from the halfway line with Kasper miles out of his goal, but it was Tierney’s thunderbolt that will echo through the generations. The goal that sent Scotland back to the World Cup. The goal that felt written for him.

Seeing Tierney step up on a night like this is no surprise. He has always thrived on big moments and big atmospheres. This one just happened to be the biggest of his international career.

Scotland Return to the World Cup

The Tartan army are going to the World Cup. They have done it the hard way, the dramatic way, and the most Scottish way possible. Thanks to a boy from Wishaw who grew up living the dream every young Celtic fan shares.

Watch the moment below.

Kieran will now have a day off for recovery before heading back to Lennoxtown to begin a marathon end to the year with Celtic. The Hoops are looking to claw their way back to top of the league, being seven points behind Hearts at the moment.

They will also want to restore some pride in their Europa League performances, and of course there is the small matter of another trip to hampden for KT and Kasper when the bhoys take on St Mirren in the Premier Sport cup final on December 14th.

The Hoops beat Rangers 3-1 at Hampden Park at the beginning of November to book their place in the final. Hopefully Kasper has a better time at the Scottish national stadium in a few weeks’ time!
