Kris Commons has claimed that neither Celtic or Rangers would be put in a similar position to St Mirren had either of the Glasgow sides have three missing goalkeepers.

On Friday evening, it was revealed that two of the Buddies keepers had tested positive for COVID-19 so were unable to play their league fixture against Hibernian, with the third and final first-team keeper at the club also being unable to play, due to his risk of transmitting the disease.

Many thought the game might have been postponed but instead Jim Goodwin’s side were forced into looking for a late, emergency loan replacement or face having to play an outfield player within in the sticks.

Luckily enough, they were able to find a man to step up, that being Hearts goalkeeper Bobby Zlamal.

As reported by the Sun, Commons revealed his thoughts on this matter and why he believed it if it involved either Celtic or Rangers, it wouldn’t have got this far.

“Can you imagine if we had an Old Firm game, with the league on the line in one of the last matches of the Premiership season, and the very same situation as happened to St Mirren occurred at Lennoxtown?

“Imagine the SPFL said to Celtic: ‘You’ve got no goalkeepers. You’ve just got to get on with it. Deal with it.’ If Celtic had to face Rangers with, say, James Forrest in goals, there would be carnage. Let’s not pretend otherwise.

“But it wouldn’t even get to that stage because, 100 per cent, the league would postpone the game. If they didn’t, there would be uproar.”

I believe at this stage, the SFA and the SPFL have their hands forced. We cannot keep postponing games if there is a positive COVID test because if that is the case we have no chance of finishing this season.

Understandably, St Mirren will be incredibly frustrated at that fact this is arguably the most important position in the pitch and they have no players available there, due to no fault of their own.

But with everything going on at the moment, these are unprecedented times. This might become the new norm for all we know. It certainly will be interesting to see if a situation like this arises again, if the same outcome would take place as the persistent seems to be set
