Kristoffer Ajer can’t wait for the new season to get underway and plat a bigger part than ever in Celtic’s success. The Norweigan has been at the club for over three years now but it was only last season where he finally solidified a place in the side after sporadic appearances and a loan move to Kilmarnock.

The defender was brilliant for the team in the second part of last season. Making game winning challenges and becoming more physical than anyone would have expected him to when Kris first signed.

One thing that did take us by surprise was Kristoffer’s admission that he has not yet been on the field for Celtic in the Champions League group stages. While he has never been a permanent fixture of the starting XI until the last while, we just assumed he saw action at some point over the two seasons Brendan Rodgers guided us into the competition.

It’s not the case, as Ajer explains:

“I actually haven’t played in the group stages yet so that’s something which would be a big achievement as well.” he told RecordSport.

“I’ve been on the bench a few times but haven’t quite made it on to the park.

“But it was still an incredible experience being that close. Celtic fans are the best in the world and when it’s an evening game against a big name there is nothing that can beat it.

“To sit on the bench was an incredible experience and I’m sure it’s a fantastic experience to play in too, so it would be great to qualify.

“The domestic trophies will always be big targets for us but we start the season off with the Champions League qualifier. For now, we focus on that but as soon as the league starts that’s our main focus as well.”

The defender will be hoping to help guide the club to the group stage and it starts next week against Sarajevo.
