Kyogo Furuhashi made an instant impact when he arrived at Celtic last summer and has been tipped to finish the leagues top goalscorer this season by Stephen Craigan.

Having missed a good chunk of the second half of the season, Kyogo still managed to finish with 20 goals in all competitions which is a terrific record for someone who had to adjust to a new league and country.

His total tally in the league was one short of the top goalscorer award which was shared by his striking partner Giorgos Giakoumakis and former Ross County star Regan Charles-Cook.

Although Craigan has backed the Japanese international to do win the award if he remains fit throughout the campaign, in typical style the former Motherwell defender has added a caveat saying that had Alfredo Morelos been fit to start the campaign, he would likely win it.

“Just think of where he would have been (last season) if he didn’t get injured,” said Stephen Craigan speaking about Kyogo on GO Radio.

“I just think if he stayed fit then think of all the goals he would have got.

“But he came back later in the season and I didn’t think he was the same player. He still looked like he was trying to get himself up to speed.

“A nice break over the summer and coming in fresh I think (would be good for him).

“You would normally say Morelos but I think because he’s possibly going to miss the first four or five weeks of the season he’s then playing catch up.

Kyogo could have seven goals by then, so I imagine it will be Kyogo.”

It was by no means a long break for Kyogo in the summer months with the striker featuring in three out of four of Japan’s friendlies in June playing right up until the middle of the month.

The 27-year old will be focused on doing well before the World Cup begins as he hopes to be a part of Hajime Moriyasu’s side for the tournament in Qatar.
