KYOGO FURUHASHI will NOT be going to the World Cup with Japan. The Celtic striker was omitted from the 26-man squad heading to Qatar later this month.

It’s shocked many Celtic fans who thought Kyogo was guaranteed a place in the side.

Kyogo Japan Fallout

Looking at the reaction and speaking to journalists from that side of the world, it’s not as big a shock for them as it is for Celtic fans. While many thought Kyogo would make the squad, they were unsure how much game time he would have been afforded.

Kyogo has really failed to make an impact in his international game over the past year in the lead-up to the World Cup. The striker has not been his best self when on international duty, and it’s come back to really bite.

One thing I see levelled at the Japanese set-up is how they could take Maeda and not Kyogo. Simply put, they are two very different players. Hajime Moriyasu sees Maeda’s explosiveness and energy, much like Ange Postecoglou. The Japan boss believes Maeda will serve a greater purpose during the World Cup campaign.

At the age of 27, this was probably Kyogo’s best chance at a World Cup spot, although he could still try and push for the next time around.

Kyogo will be hurting today and in the month ahead when he sees his country play at the World Cup.

We hope he uses that energy to really kick on and show Hajime Moriyasu what he’s missing.

  1. Nothing stopping him from still going to watch his mates though. Everyone is getting the same time off, if they fail to get anywhere or if part of the squad gets covalent before they go. He may get draughted in. Win win for Kyogo.
