KYOGO FURUHASHI has admitted he was contemplating giving up football when he was trialling for different clubs after he had finished his studies.

In Japan, footballers complete university before turning into professional players.

Kyogo admits he struggled to find a club after he had completed his time at uni, and had come close to quitting football.

However, the Celtic striker persevered and now finds himself likely to represent his country at the World Cup and lead the line for Celtic in the Champions League. He’ll be glad he didn’t hang up his boots prematurely.

Speaking to  Tokyo Weekender, Kyogo revealed;

“I was ready to give up.

“I’d been playing since I was five and did okay at student level. In my final year at university, I had trials at different teams, but I couldn’t find a team.

“Fortunately, I had many supportive people around me, especially my parents, who were brilliant. That helped me keep going, and I eventually got my chance at Gifu.”

Kyogo has been tremendous since he signed for Celtic, hitting the twenty goal mark and assisting his teammates on five occasions.

Considering he spent a chunk of his debut season in Scotland on the sidelines due to injury, that’s impressive. I bet some J-League sides are kicking themselves that they didn’t manage to capture the then young talent.
