It has been well documented over the past 12 months that Edwin Van Der Sar has been helping Peter Lawwell in the fight against the big clubs of Europe and UEFA as they try to make the Champions League a closed shop.

Using his role at Ajax, the former goalkeeper has been banging the drum for the likes of the Dutch club and Celtic who feel they’re being squeezed out of the competition by the money hungry top five leagues.

Peter Lawwell continues to fight for the best interests of Celtic and Scottish football but is he about lose Van der sar in that battle?

It is being reported today by the Metro that the Ajax chief is closing in on a move to his former club Manchester Utd as the director of football. If the Dutchman takes up the position, it’s very unlikely he’s going to continue the quest for equality and at worst may flip against it with his new employer’s.

There’s an argument he could use his new influence at Old Trafford for the good of the game but we’ll have to wait and see.
