Celtic’s Liam Scales was involved as Ireland lost out by two goals to nil against Greece in Athens last night.

After a dramatic 2-1 win over Finland on Thursday in which the centre-back netted his first goal for his country, things were finally looking optimistic under new boss Heimir Hallgrimsson.

Away in Athens, though, his side suffered a disappointing defeat, with Anastasios Bakasetas and Petros Mantalos sealing a 2-0 victory for the hosts.

Scales played the full 90, but Adam Idah remained on the bench throughout the match.

The 23-year-old only got 10 minutes against Finland on Thursday as self-proclaimed Celtic fan Evan Ferguson and AZ Alkmaar’s Troy Parrott played ahead of him up top last night.

Despite a recent change in manager, Ireland’s fortunes aren’t improving.

They have won just one in four under new boss Halgrimsson, who has hardly set things alight in his first few international breaks at the helm.

It takes time for managers to get their ideas across, though, particularly in international football.

The Nations League is more or less a free hit for countries, but Irish fans want results to improve sooner rather than later.

Their country face Greece in Dublin next month before a trip to Wembley rounds off what has been a relatively underwhelming Nations League campaign so far.
