Celtic defender Liam Scales was close to rejoining Aberdeen over the summer. Few would have expected the Irishman to rejuvenate his career the way he has done.
In Glasgow’s east end, the 25-year-old has been a standout so far this season. He has recently said, however, that a move back to the Dons was on the cards. Speaking to Football Scotland Liam said: “I suppose at the start of the year I think I came back into pre-season with Celtic and most people thought I was going to go back to Aberdeen.
“It was sort of in the pipeline, there was talk of it happening. Then obviously a few injuries happened. I think I’ve surprised in the sense that maybe I wasn’t fully in the picture, then a few injuries happened and I was thrown straight in and did well, and I’ve held my place now.”
Scales’ story is one that proves anything can happen in football. It was completely circumstantial, but the former Shamrock Rovers man took his opportunity with both hands.
Right now, the number five is undroppable. Scales will be eager to keep his place going forward and as long as he puts in performances at the level he is currently, he will do.
