Much has been made of the transfer summer saga between Southampton and former Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk. The hyperbolic nature of the transfer market down south put Virgil in like to be the worlds most expensive defender, had Southampton cashed in on the defender.

While I like to say ‘I told you so’ to the moronic element of the EPL support that belittle players who play for Celtic in the Scottish League. The very thought that a man who made his name in a Celtic jersey on a domestic level becoming the worlds most expensive defender seems like some sort of vindication. However, I think the EPL sides vying for his signature have missed

However, I think the EPL sides vying for his signature have missed a trick; especially Liverpool.

Yes, Liverpool’s defence could be doing with the calm, dynamism that Virgil van Dijk offers but there’s a man sitting at Southampton who will win you 9-12 points a season in the EPL and when the margins are fine, that is not to be sniffed at.

I’m talking about Fraser Forster, the goalkeeper Celtic plucked from the obscurity of the Newcastle reserves to being plastered all over Spanish newspapers describing him as ‘The Great Wall’. Fraser was a revelation at Celtic and was a welcome addition to Neil Lennon’s side back when the Irishman was carving out his team. Fraser was the lynchpin of some incredible results and broke a consecutive clean-sheet run that lasted 1,256 minutes.

After overcoming serious injury at Southampton, Fraser has been a bright spark for his team. Gaining 14 clean sheets last season and was part of the side who did not concede a goal on their way to the League Cup final only to be beaten 3-2 on the day.

For me, the ‘top sides’ in the EPL should be queueing up to get Forster in their ranks, if they’re going to go for anyone at Southampton.

The St Mary’s side were quick to sign Fraser up to a new five-year-deal this summer to reward the big man’s efforts and to make sure when the clubs do come calling, they will get top dollar for him – much like van Dijk.

  1. Great as he was, Forster’s kicking is atrocious, Rodgers would have binned him and for the same reason Klopp wouldn’t want him
