Celtic Chairman Ian Bankier said it was “not in the interests” of Celtic to follow in the footsteps of clubs like Hearts – in signing up for the living wage scheme at today’s AGM.

A statement which didn’t go down well with a lot of shareholders attending today.

Celtic employees are paid £7.85 per hour, which was the previous living wage. However, the rate was adjusted by the Living Wage Foundation last month to £8.25.

Many shareholders have called for the club to change their stance.

This is just another example of Celtic fans holding the board to account when it comes to the ethos of the club. They feel the club should be leading the way when it comes to paying their employees a living wage, but the board don’t want to commit to a wage structure not set by themselves.

They did, however, say that the wages do get reviewed annually and will be looked at again in the coming months.

“We have not made decisions going forward. We will make a decision later in the year.” said Head of HR – Mike Hayes.
