The Liverpool-born midfielder signed for Celtic as an 18-year-old from Bolton Wanderers where he had broken into the first-team. Connell penned a four-year deal with the Hoops in June 2019 and immediately flew out to Celtic’s pre-season training camp in Austria to join the squad.
Connell rose to prominence earlier in 2019 after breaking into Bolton’s first team that January. His professional debut came as a late substitute against Walsall in the third round of the FA Cup. The teenager went on to make 12 appearances for the English Championship side during the remainder of the season.
Mature and assured performances with the first-team earned him a call up to the Republic of Ireland squad.
His mature and assured performances with the first-team earned him a call up to the Republic of Ireland squad, who he was eligible to represent through his Grandparents, in May of 2019 for the European qualifiers.
A month after his arrival at Paradise, Connell made his Hoops bow in a pre-season friendly at Celtic Park against Rennes where he gave fans a glimpse of his potential with a solid display against the French outfit.
In March 2021, Connell made the short trip to join Queen’s Park on loan and arrived just in time for the Spiders to play their last ever league game at Hampden before departing when they beat Stranraer 3-0. As well as helping Queen’s Park to the League Two title and promotion, Connell also scored in their final two league games – against Edinburgh City and Elgn City who finished second and third respectively.
Luca Connell has represented the Republic of Ireland at various youth levels including the under-17s, 18s and 19s. In May of 2019 he earned a called up to the senior squad after an impressive run of performances in Bolton’s first-team, and although he had to pull out through injury, he has since made his debut for the Under-21s and will be pushing to get back into the senior squad.
