DAIZEN MAEDA started Japan’s 2-1 win over Germany on Wednesday afternoon. Despite not officially getting on the scoresheet, the Celtic striker netted the ball before it was flagged offside.

It’s made the group extremely interesting, with Spain and Costa Rica to play on Wednesday evening.

Germany took the lead in the first half, heading into the break 1-0 to the good. A strong second-half performance from the Japanese side saw them pull themselves level before finding a winner in the 83rd minute.

Maeda didn’t finish the match after he was subbed off in the 57th minute. He will be hoping that he made a big enough impression to lead the line again on Sunday, with Costa Rica the opponents for the 10 am kick-off.

It was a stunning result for Japan, grabbing three points from one of the favourites to win the tournament.

A result on Sunday could be enough to see Japan progress to the next round of the competition if other results go their way.
