It was over a month ago when Celtic were linked with a move for Sunderland’s top goalscorer Charlie Wyke. The player has come to the end of his contract at the Stadium of Light and the Nothern Echo reported recently the Hoops were increasingly confident of signing the English frontman.

Since then, it’s all gone a bit quiet on Charlie, but that’s not just from the Celtic end of things. Sunderland gaffer Lee Johnson has confirmed he’s not heard from the player and is 95% sure he will move on from the club now.

“I would say the door is ajar, but we’re certainly not expecting him to come back.” Johnson admitted to The Chronicle.

“I’d say that it would be him coming back to us and saying he wants to talk again, effectively. My gut says that he will move on, I’d say 95 percent that he’ll move on. But we would leave the door ajar because at the moment, you never know.

“There’s a lot of people talking in the Championship but who aren’t in a great place in terms of being able to commit to players financially. They seem to have been hit the hardest and in some cases, it’s the League One clubs who seem to be the largest spenders.”

Wyke scored 30+ goals for his club last season and has been in demand because of it.

Any Sunderland fan we’ve spoken to have not been so encouraging when it comes to the player’s upside. A lot of their supporters believe the striker is no big loss, even with the goals he scored last term.

There’s a belief among some that the striker has probably had his best season.

A lot of players tend to do really well the season their contract is up for grabs.

Will Celtic see value in adding Charlie to the squad? Only time will tell.

  1. Nesbit at Hibernian would be a far better prospect for us , younger and potential sell on Value , Wyke too old to punt on
