Marco Tilio’s Celtic exit dragged on far longer than anyone expected, but once Rapid Wien switched from a loan-to-buy proposal to a straight purchase, the deal finally got over the line.
The Austrian side agreed a £1.3m fee, bringing an end to a frustrating two-year spell in Glasgow that produced just two senior appearances.
The original offer had included a £400,000 loan fee and a clause that would only trigger the £1.3m transfer if Tilio made 20 competitive starts. Brendan Rodgers told CeltsAreHere at the time that Celtic had to be cautious with outgoing loans due to the six-loan limit, which complicated matters.
A few months on, here’s how Tilio is settling into life at Rapid Wien.
The Australian has made seven league appearances so far, scoring one goal, which arrived in just his second Bundesliga outing. He’s also featured in Europe, playing 45 minutes in a Conference League match against Luis Palma’s Lech Poznań, though he hasn’t been used in the other two fixtures. Domestically, he’s added one cup appearance to his tally.
It’s not been an explosive start, but he’s getting minutes and looks far more involved than he ever managed at Celtic Park.
He hasn’t been in the Australian national side over the past few breaks, so he’ll be hoping to find form and start breaking into those squads again.
