Celtic will face stiff competition if in the pursuit for highly-rated Philepelphia Union central defender, Mark McKenzie.

As reported by Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, it was revealed by the American clubs Sporting Director, Ernst Tanner that they face heavy competition from sides in the Bundesliga and the English Premier League.

It was also revealed by Joseph, that Neil Lennon’s side was in talks with the American about signing for the club but opted to go with Brighton’s Shane Duffy on loan instead.

It is thought that high on Celtic’s agenda for the January transfer window is a central defender, so it is highly likely they will go back in for the American international defender. However, it does look increasingly unlikely that the Hoops will have a chance of signing him with some of Europe’s top clubs also on their tale.

With the signing of Shane Duffy not appearing to work out, this may have been a big mistake by the club to take the short term option instead of looking at a younger defender.

We will just need to wait and see where he goes and how he turns out if he ends up going elsewhere in Europe but it could prove to be a costly mistake.
