Celtic defensive target Mark McKenzie is reportedly set to complete a move to Belgian league side Genk.

According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, the Philadelphia Union centre back is close to making his move to Belgium after negotiations over the festive period with the deal set to be worth up to £5 million.

The American defender has been a stand out in the MLS this season and was reportedly targeted by the club back in the summer but Celtic opted to sign Shane Duffy on a season-long loan.

This move feels like a real missed opportunity for Neil Lennon’s side, after missing out on what looks to be a top talent from the states.

The price tag that Genk are paying wouldn’t exactly be breaking the bank either, especially for a player of McKenzie’s reputation across Europe and his age.

It’s expected that Celtic will still be looking to get defensive reinforcements during this transfer window. Unfortunately, though, it looks as though McKenzie won’t be one of those options.
