Former Celtic defender and now pundit Mark Wilson thinks that Anthony Ralston is suited to playing left-back as well as on his natural right side.

It comes after Alexandro Bernabei officially departed the Hoops on Wednesday on loan until the end of 2024. His exit leaves a gap in the squad at left-back.

Indeed, the only fit, senior option Brendan Rodgers has in said position is Greg Taylor. Wilson, though, thinks that Ralston is more than capable of doing a job there and that Bernabei’s move to Internacional wouldn’t have been sanctioned if the gaffer didn’t think so.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, Wilson outlined his opinion that the treble-winner can amply turn out at left full-back: “The choice between Ralston playing left-back or continue with Bernabei as your back-up, I’d have Ralston”, he said.

“I think it means more to Ralston, I think he’s a better defender. Of course you miss the left-sided, Ralston’s always going to come in.

“Look, I played a lot in my Celtic career at left-back so it can be done.”

In the past, Ralston has played on the opposite to his natural side. Away to Aberdeen at the beginning of last month, he came on for the closing stages in place of Bernabei.

Unless Greg Taylor sustains another injury, though, the 25-year-old won’t be required out with right-back.

It would be far from ideal to have to rely on Ralston at left-back in a crucial title run-in but with the dwindling options there, it is the next best thing
