Martin O’Neill has revealed he would have been happy to continue his interim spell at Celtic, but insists the club made it clear his time was up.
The former Hoops boss led Celtic to seven wins from eight during his short stint and guided them into a League Cup final, which ultimately ended in defeat under Wilfried Nancy.
With Nancy now under pressure after losing his first three matches in charge, conceding eight and scoring just two, fans have questioned the decision to move on from O’Neill at such a pivotal point in the season.
And speaking to TalkSPORT, O’Neill made it clear he wasn’t the one who walked away:
“If they had asked me to stay on, I would have done so. But the minute that they said, no, listen, that’s your time. That is fine to me.”
It’s a telling quote that adds weight to growing criticism of the board. Fans have made it clear that they wanted the legendary manager to stay on in his role, and it’s now confirmed that he would have done so.
Celtic’s decision to hand Nancy the reins ahead of games against Hearts, Roma and St Mirren has backfired, with the Frenchman becoming the first manager in club history to lose his first three games in charge.
O’Neill’s calm presence and knack for grinding out results offered stability. Instead, Celtic opted for revolution and right now, they’re paying the price.
It was a gamble, and it was a gamble that, so far, hasn’t paid off.
