Martin O’Neill Confirms Arne Engels Bid Rejected As He Addresses His Future

Martin O’Neill has confirmed West Ham United have made an offer for Arne Engels, but Celtic have no intention of accepting it at the current valuation.

The Belgian midfielder has been heavily linked with a move away from Parkhead in recent weeks, with West Ham pushing to get a deal over the line before the window closes.

Reports have suggested bids have already been rejected, with O’Neill’s latest comments confirming so. Several Premier League clubs are also monitoring his situation.

Speaking to the media, O’Neill acknowledged West Ham’s interest but made it clear the club are standing their ground on the fee. He said (Sky Sports):

“I think there’s definitely truth in that. There’s been something put in, but it doesn’t remotely meet our valuation.”

That stance is hardly surprising given Celtic’s position earlier this year. Nottingham Forest saw a bid worth up to £25 million rejected on deadline day during the winter transfer window, and the club appear unwilling to lower their demands now.

Reports have also claimed Engels has reached a verbal agreement with West Ham over personal terms, although that counts for little unless the two clubs can settle on a transfer fee.

At this stage, they remain some distance apart.

Engels still has two years left on his Celtic contract, leaving the Scottish champions in a strong negotiating position. There is no immediate pressure to sell unless their asking price is met.

The 22-year-old has shown enough during his time in Glasgow to attract attention from England, and Celtic will know there is little benefit in accepting less than they believe he is worth if multiple clubs are keeping a close eye on the situation.

For now, there is no agreement between the clubs despite the growing speculation.

O’Neill’s comments make it clear West Ham’s opening offer has fallen well short of Celtic’s expectations, and unless that changes quickly, there is still work to do before any transfer is completed.

Interest is there, the player may be open to the move, but Celtic remain in control of the situation. With their valuation unchanged and time still left in the window, there is little indication the club are about to soften their stance.
