Martin O’Neill has confirmed Celtic’s interest in Fares Ghedjemis, with the club stepping up their pursuit of the Frosinone winger ahead of the new season.
The 23-year-old was firmly on Celtic’s radar during the January transfer window, but a deal never materialised as Frosinone pushed for promotion. Staying put proved the right decision for the French-born Algerian, who played a major role in helping his side secure a return to Serie A.
Ghedjemis finished the campaign with 15 goals and three assists, establishing himself as one of Frosinone’s standout attacking players. His form also earned him a place in Algeria’s World Cup squad, although his involvement was limited to a brief stoppage-time appearance from the bench.
O’Neill confirmed that the Scottish champions are actively working on a deal, although he stopped short of suggesting that any agreement has been made. He said (The Celtic Way):
“We have a very, very strong interest in him. I don’t know how close we can get, but we are genuinely making really good progress.”
Those comments will encourage supporters who have been waiting to see movement in the attacking department. Celtic have been linked with several wide players throughout the summer, but progress has been slow.
The Herald’s Stephen McGowan reported that talks with Haissem Hassan’s representatives have “dragged on”, and Celtic seem to be exploring other options; that’s not to say a deal is off the table. However, Ghedjemis now appears to be back at the forefront of the club’s plans.
The winger is reported to be valued at around £8 million after a season that significantly raised his stock in Italy.
That represents a sizeable investment, but it also reflects the level of player Celtic have in their sights. Ghedjemis arrives off the back of a productive campaign, has experience of delivering in a promotion-winning side and is entering what should be the strongest years of his career.
Whether Celtic can get a deal over the line remains to be seen over the coming weeks, but there is now confirmation from inside the club that the interest is real. After months of links and reports, the pursuit has moved into a more serious phase as Celtic continue their search for extra quality in the final third.
