Ex Celtic boss, Martin O’Neill has compared current Celtic star Odsonne Edouard to the legendary number seven Henrik Larsson

Speaking on the BBC Sportsound podcast, O’Neill believes Edouard is vital to Neil Lennons Celtic side and thinks it is crucial that the Northern Irishman keeps Edouard for next seasons title bid.

When he was asked about if Edouard was as vital to Lennon, as Larsson was to O’Neills own side he said

“Of course, yes. In my five years there we didn’t have Henrik for the final year and you’re always trying to make do. It’s very important to hold on to your best players because these are the ones that will win matches for you”

With the Frenchman reportedly in talks to sign a new deal, to extend his contract past 2022, it is clear to see he is an important figure to Neil Lennon’s squad, as Larsson was for Martin O’Neill’s side. He also added

“You know when the likes of Larsson is still on the field you still have a chance of winning that game. And that’s exactly now the situation Neil finds himself in (with Edouard).”

It’s safe to say, most fans would agree that it is crucial Eddy stays for this season in order for us to have the best chance of securing the 10.

Many will also be praying Edouard himself feels the same way and signs the new deal being offered to him in order to make sure he is here for next season. It takes a lot to be compared to a player of Henrik’s calibre by a man such as Martin O’Neill. It is likely something he deserves with the huge influence he has had on this Celtic side.
