Martin O’Neill praised young defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey after the Manchester City loanee made his senior Celtic debut in the 4–0 win over Kilmarnock.

Thrown in at right-back, a position unfamiliar to him, Simpson-Pusey showed character and composure in a performance that caught the attention of the manager and supporters alike.

The 20-year-old was given his first start amid Celtic’s injury concerns, with O’Neill admitting post-match that it was something of a gamble to play him out of position. Despite a nervous start, Simpson-Pusey grew into the game, defending confidently and contributing to a clean sheet as Celtic cruised to victory.

His debut summed up Celtic’s day — brave decisions paying off. While the team’s attacking play will grab the headlines, Simpson-Pusey’s ability to adapt and settle in such a high-pressure environment offered real encouragement for the weeks ahead. O’Neill’s comments revealed both the risk behind the decision and the satisfaction in seeing the youngster rise to the challenge.

It was the kind of debut that shows promise for the future. For O’Neill, it showed the importance of giving opportunities to emerging talent, even if the circumstances aren’t ideal.

He said: (TCW), “I took a bit of a risk, really, on the Manchester City lad [Jahmai Simpson-Pusey].

“I thought, well, if he can play centre half, maybe he can play out there. Got off to, hmm, not a brilliant start to begin with, you know.

“I thought about taking him off after four minutes! Don’t tell him that! But, no, he did fine. He actually did fine. I think he got applauded off the pitch, which was nice. Not necessarily by me, but there.

“But, no, I was delighted. Honestly, really pleased.”

O’Neill spoke with his usual mix of honesty and humour. Admitting he’d thought about taking Simpson-Pusey off early showed how high Celtic’s standards are, but it also showed the trust he gives young players to find their feet.

He was clearly pleased, not just with the win but with how the youngster handled his debut. Simpson-Pusey stayed calm, played his way into the game, and showed maturity well beyond his age in front of a big Celtic Park crowd.

For a player still learning the senior game, it was a big step. O’Neill’s joke about the applause “not necessarily by me” showed how relaxed he was about it all and how happy he was to see the defender grow into the occasion.

It was a debut full of promise and fight. Simpson-Pusey showed he’s got the character to cope at this level, and O’Neill’s reaction underlined his faith in giving young players their chance when it matters.
