Despite an incredible season which saw him be named Celtic’s Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, and Players’ Player of the Year, Matt O’Riley will not be going to the Euros with Denmark.
The attack-minded midfielder received his maiden senior call-up last September and debuted for the national team against Northern Ireland a few months later.
He was in the squad during the most recent international break, too, even playing half an hour for his country against the Faroe Islands in a friendly.
For the Euros, though, rather unexpectedly, O’Riley has not been called up. Boss Kasper Hjulmand this afternoon named the 26 players that will head to Germany in a few weeks, with the 23-year-old not included.
While this will come as a blow for O’Riley, perhaps it could be a blessing in disguise for Celtic.
If the former MK Dons man went to the tournament and showed the quality we know he has, especially when Denmark plays England, interest in him would likely pique.
He won’t be going anywhere, though, and his focus will fully be on Celtic ahead of the new season.
