Sorry Callum, Scotland is just too good for you to get a call up at present.

The astonishing claim by Scotland Assistant Manager Mark McGhee is so loaded with flaws it makes the eyes water.

Here are McGhee’s full comments on Callum McGregor not getting a call-up not once but twice in a week.

“The thing about it is, we still have James Morrison, James McArthur, and Barry Bannan and not only are these guys good players, they are the guys who are in possession and the guys who have been here already through this. They are still playing well, they are still doing well for their clubs, and deserve to continue. At the moment, we have too many players and too many riches in that area of the park. It’s not that any of us here don’t think he is a good player, or don’t think he has a future playing for Scotland but at this moment we have the people we need in that area.”

I’ve boldened some of McGhee’s comments that are just laughable. The guys already there have been selected because they are already part of the setup – Is that the setup that’s failing miserably at the moment? The players above had plenty of opportunities to impress but to say Callum McGregor is anything like the ones mentioned, on current form is ridiculous. Callum is a very attacking minded midfielder who can help with goals by either scoring them himself or assisting. He can thread a pass many others wouldn’t be able to see and can turn a game. With all due respect to the other midfielders McGhee mentions, they are unable to bring all of this to their roles.

That’s why it’s perplexing as well as frustrating that the Celtic midfielder has been omitted from the squad.

If one of the genuine reasons for Callum not being called-up is because other players are already part of the setup, then I weep for the immediate future of our national game.

  1. This very statmenr prices mark McGhee knows fukall about good football player and should be sacked for this statement alone McGregor Armstrong Griffiths Tierney Brown ciarney have been Scotland’s best talents for the last six months to a year I hate this managment team it’s tactics and philosophy it’s bang average and needs changing

  2. Apart from Cairney who I can’t quite place I totally agree with the rest of your statement
Mark McGhee is a joke as a manager Has managed more clubs than Tiger Woods although neither Woods nor McGhee would appear to be managing any clubs at the moment
McGhee did a turn for Celtic in the 80s but hasn’t had a good word to say about our Club since
Had it been someone with a modecum of nous in footballing matters I’d feel quite cut up for Calmac but McGhee is a prick no more no less and El Gordo is a waste of Fuckin’ space
    Couldnae run a ménage
As long as Scotland have a management team of the likes of these 2 bampots ww won’t qualify for any major tournaments
If I was Calmac and got the call up by this pair in the future I’d politely decline the offer and wait until a manager of some substance is installed

  3. Has McGhee not got a mind of his own. He’s only said what Strachan said. At the very least Calum should be part off the squad, the BHOY has come on leaps and bounds over the past year
