This season, the midfield three has been pretty consistent so far – with Callum McGregor, David Turnbull and Tom Rogic being the most used in that area of the pitch.

However, many fans would likely argue that is down to no fault of our own due to not doing enough in the summer transfer window to cover the midfield and provide Ange Postecoglou with more quality options.

Speaking to the media ahead of tomorrow’s Europa League fixture, captain Callum McGregor insisted that Ange does have several options in the midfield he can turn to.

“The manager wants to control the ball and possession,” he said as quoted by Glasgow Live.

“We’ve got guys in there that can do that. David and Tom are probably more forward-thinking in terms of their positioning, but there’s a reason for that in terms of what the manager wants in certain games.

“Nir started at Aberdeen because we probably needed more physicality in there and a defensive brain.

“He’s got good options in there to pick and choose for certain games.”

In games this season, the midfield trio of McGregor, Turnbull and Rogic have shown they have the quality to hurt teams, and that was evident again last weekend.

However, we cannot be totally reliant on just three players during such a busy winter period. But unfortunately, we aren’t able to add players until the January window, so Ange will have to work with what he has.

At this moment in time, the most likely to come in and replace one of the three is Nir Bitton, who has featured in that area in his last two appearances against Motherwell and Aberdeen.

We will need to hope we don’t see another injury to Callum McGregor as we did in the past month, or it could cause us some trouble again.
