Micah Richards has spoken about Kelechi Iheanacho after the striker’s impressive showing for Celtic against Red Star Belgrade.
Iheanacho marked his European debut for Celtic with a goal in Belgrade, putting Brendan Rodgers’ team ahead before Red Star hit back for a 1-1 draw. The finish showed the calmness in front of goal that Richards says has always been one of his biggest strengths.
The former England defender admitted he once thought Iheanacho would become the main striker for a top Premier League side. His time at Leicester and later Sevilla had mixed results, but Richards believes Celtic may now give him the right stage to show his best form.
Back working with Rodgers and already on the scoresheet in Europe, Richards suggested this season could be the one where Iheanacho rebuilds his reputation and proves himself as a consistent goalscorer.
He said: (The Rest is Football), “I was with him at Man City, and, to be honest, I expected more.
“That’s how good I thought he was going to be.
“I thought he would play, not Champions League football in this country, but 8th to 5th, he could be a striker for him because his composure in front of goal was outstanding.
“It has just not worked out, but he’s now at Celtic and it looks like he’s got his confidence back, what a platform to show that as well.”
Richards’ comments highlight the talent people have always seen in Iheanacho. His career hasn’t been as smooth as many expected, but his ability to finish chances has never really been questioned.
For Celtic, his signing feels perfectly timed for Iheanacho. Rodgers has been looking for more firepower up front, and he brings both know-how and quality, especially when it comes to big European nights.

The goal in Belgrade was proof of that. He showed calmness and sharp decision-making, the kind of qualities Celtic have often missed when chances come at the highest level.
If confidence is what unlocks his best form, as Richards believes, then Celtic might be about to benefit. For Iheanacho, this is a chance to show he still has what it takes to perform at the top.
