With the manager stating that he would like at least TWO more players in before the window closes and the emergence of Michel Vorm as a target, all departments look strong, however, it still feels we are lacking in midfield. I and many others Celtic fans would like to see a dynamic midfielder brought in, someone who can really take a game by the scruff of the neck and dictate the play from the centre of the pitch.
Scott Brown seems to be rejuvenated in the last few games but he needs help in there, at the moment there are too many players falling short. There are question marks over Commons future, Stuart Armstrong has not yet fulfilled his potential, Callum McGregor is a good squad player and Nir Biton is inconsistent and wants too many touches at times, he can look calm and assured and is possibly better suited to European football than the frenetic pace of the SPFL. As I look at the plethora of midfielders we have the most disappointing performances have come from Stefan Johansen, the former player of the year has had a dramatic fall from grace and it’s hard to see why he is even getting a game at the moment. Does he add something different when he’s in the starting XI? I’m not so sure. His first full season at Celtic was one to remember but the Norweigan has never hit those lofty heights since.
The player seemed to be ahead of Rogic in the pecking order but that could be about to change with the big Aussie putting pen to paper on a new deal which has delighted the fans who like myself would like to see him getting more game time. The 23 year-old’s performance last night did him no harm whatsoever! This leaves us still with too many bodies vying for the central roles in the middle of the park, personally, I would give Rogic and Biton time under Rodgers to see if he can develop them. There is definitely potential there but it would make good sense to move on Johansen who has previously been linked with moves away and free up space and wages not to mention a decent fee which could be possibly be reinvested before the deadline.Â
