Former Celtic target Riley McGree has confirmed he did have a conversation with Ange Postecoglou about a move to Celrtic before opting for Middlesbrough.

Ange was adamant at the time, he was never going to sell Celtic to any player he speaks with. The Hoops manager believes the club speaks for itself and what can be achieved in the green and white hoops. The Hoops boss conceded Riley had other ideas and he swiftly moved on to securing Matt O’Riley from MK Dons.

“Me and Ange did have a conversation,” McGree told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“But as I said before, and the reasons why I gave before – that’s why I made the choice to go to Middlesbrough. At the end of the day, it’s my career, and I strongly believe I did what’s best for me.”

Some players in the game believe playing in England is where they need to be and the money on offer is very difficult to turn down.

The players who come to Celtic despite interest from England are always betting on themselves and want to seek medals, growth and ultimately win a massive move.

There are players who want to take the money upfront because it’s such a short career. We shouldn’t castigate the players who feel like this. As McGree said, it’s his career and if playing for Middlesbrough appears more beneficial at this stage in his career than playing in front of 60k at Celtic Park and competing for trophies – more power to him.
