It is a long shot for most Celtic fans, but they would love to see someone of Rafa Benitez’ ilk get the Celtic gig but it seems pie in the sky.

However, for those dreaming of a scenario where this could be possible then the latest developments in his talks with current club Newcastle will be of interest.

All week it has been billed as Rafa Benitez set for sit down talks with Mike Ashley over his future but it appears the Newcastle chairman has delegated the job to someone else.

According to Sky Sports.com the negotiations between the club and Rafa have been dealt with by their managing director and NOT the chairman.

Sky Sports understands that Newcastle’s managing director Lee Charnley has been tasked by owner Mike Ashley to lead the negotiations with Benitez.

This could be significant if Ashley doesn’t deem his presence necessary, it could rub the Spaniard the wrong way.

Benitez has not hidden his desire to push Newcastle forward but will only stay if the owner matches his ambitions.

Celtic are looking for a new full time gaffer and Rafa is currently the bookies favourite but that counts for nothing at the moment.

  1. And you really see PL, DD and the Tory board matching Rafa’s ambitions? Not a chance. I think he would be interested but 2 minutes in he would be given a list a bargain basement signings and the interview would end. His wages would not be a problem but he woul not be given any more money other than wages. I think they will try to persuade Clarke and try to get him to work with 50 quid more than he had to work with at Kilmarnock. I am dreading this whole process. Lennon won’t take it. He doesn’t look as if his heart is in it. And any other candidate will have to be unemployed and desperate. No compo, no budget. Bye bye 9 in a row. They are just about to shell out 15-20 mill they don’t have on players and will do anything to stop the 9, 10 in a row. Celtic need to match them at least. But it won’t happen. The first interview question will be, can you win the league with what we have? We are staggering into the new season and 9 or 10 in a row. There is no ambition, no new ideas, no enthusiasm.

  2. By the way Lennon has the job you can bank on that and at 7/2 your money go fill your bank account, Lennon is already doing work done and getting things ready for the start of next season he will get £20 million war chest to bring in four or five seasoned pros…
