There’s one man who has had a good career away from Scotland but always wished he had got the call from Celtic.

Many supporters will know the links between Celtic and Johnny Russell over the years and how he could have been a Celtic player a long time ago.

During his Dundee Utd run there was heavy speculation the player would make the switch to his boyhood heroes. It never came about and Russell has carved a career out down south and in the states latterly.

Speaking about the Celtic interest from the past, Russell confirmed their bids were rejected speaking to Herald Sport.

“I always said the dream was to play for Celtic but it’s never happened.”

“That’s football. The season I went to Derby was there were a few bids made but Derby offered more and Celtic’s bids were never accepted. If they had been matched I would’ve gone to Celtic, I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.

Asked if he would still jump at the chance to play for the club, Russell said:

“Of course, nobody is going to turn down the opportunity to play for their heroes. It was always something I’d never give up hope on. You never know.”

Russell is now 30 and plays for Kansas in the MLS. The ship has no doubt sailed on ever pulling on the Hoops. We could have been doing with wide man this season in James Forrest’s absence but Celtic have had to get by with players playing out of position.

Neil Lennon and the bhoys are heading to the end of this season with no silverware to show for themselves. The Scottish Cup looks likely to be pushed into next season.
