MORTIZ JENZ is referred to as the German Maldini by some folk over in Germany after two games with his new loan club FC Schalke.

The former Hoops defender spent six months at Celtic earlier this season, where he helped build the bhoys a nine-point lead at the top of the table. However, when Carl Starfelt returned to full fitness, he was surpluses to requirements.

Ange Postecoglou then signed Yuki Kobayashi as his third-choice defender behind CCV and Carl, leaving Jenz further down the pecking order.

When the opportunity arose for Moritz to head back to his home country to play for Schalke, he jumped at the opportunity. The relegation-threatened side needed all the reinforcements they could get in January – sticking a deal with FC Lorient to take the player on loan and turn the deal permanent should they avoid the drop.

The German’s have kept clean sheets in the two games Jenz has played. In the prior two games, they had shipped a whopping nine goals. Unfortunately, their attacking threat still isn’t quite there, so they’ve played out two 0-0 draws, but they’ll see it as a step in the right direction. Jenz earning the Maldini moniker, as one reporter in Germany told us.

The official account went have adopted Celtic’s nickname for the defender.

Jenz did well during his time at Celtic, and we’re glad he’s off to a good start with his new club.
