Neil Lennon was asked during an interview over the weekend if he would have survived two trophyless seasons after his counterpart across the city failed in his second year to bring a trophy home.

The Celtic manager was honest and frank when he replied:

“Probably not, such is the nature in Glasgow and the level of expectation,” Lennon explained to BT Sport as cited by RecordSport.

The Celtic manager was complimentary of his rivals to a point but couldn’t escape the fact that a charmed life is being lived over the other side of the city.

“There’s been a steady improvement in Rangers.

“They were strong in the first half of the season.

“We were getting pushed and were responding all the time. Then in the second half, we responded even
better to a point where teams around us couldn’t keep up with us and that’s something I don’t take lightly. It takes a certain mentality to do that, to keep winning when
everyone expects you to win .”

The boss across the city proves it’s not about what you’ve done now as a manager but what you did as a player in the past that dictates opinion.

Neil Lennon won plenty as a player and now as a manager, yet, he is constantly undermined and knows himself if Celtic weren’t still heading for a treble, the knives would be out.

The Celtic manager doesn’t get enough credit for what he’s done with Celtic and I include myself as well as many other supporters in that when he took the role back permanently at the start of the season.

He’s proved a lot of people wrong and we all know one season without any trophies at Celtic Park would see few managers survive that. Perhaps that’s acceptable elsewhere.

  1. How many managers, did Celtics conveyer belt of hope of success, go through during the auld Co’s Ebt marked (and not by a asterisk) of league wins? History always has the answer. And quite a few big names who had illustrious footballing careers were cast aside during those empty seasons.
That’s why Hoops supporters adopted the ‘No excuses’ mantra. Looking back even further, before 1965, how many Hoops managers even got to pick a team never mind get a set budget.
