Jim Goodwin and St Mirren tried to pull off a late swoop for Celtic fringe strike Vakoun Bayo on deadline day but according to the Saints boss it never got off the ground.

Peter Lawwell were in the building until 11:30pm on deadline day with absolutely nothing to show for it, but at least they were in to let St Mirren know they wouldn’t be letting Bayo leave.

Speaking to SunSport Goodwin said: “We’ve made enquiries about every player that’s not playing for any of the big clubs. not only in Scotland but throughout the whole UK.

“We have offered a number of them that opportunity.

“Of course someone like Bayo would be fantastic signing for us. But Lennon wants to work with four strikers and that’s where that one ends.”

Ideally, it would have been great for Bayo to go out and play regular games against SPFL opposition for the rest of this campaign to give the striker a proper chance to develop. However, with Celtic losing wingers through injury there’s a real chance Neil Lennon plays with two strikers for a majority of the season.

This means he would need four strikers in case of any injuries. In that respect, it’s the right move but if everyone stays fit then Bayo will be twiddling his thumbs on the bench for the rest of the campaign.
