Celtic youngster Callum Osmand has gone from being frozen out of the first-team picture to becoming a derby-day hero in the space of just a few weeks and now it’s been revealed he could have been playing his football elsewhere.
A report came out a few weeks ago, that a Championship had made a loan approach, and Osmand had turned it down. At the time, it was a bit surprising, but it’s working out well for him now.
Speaking on Sunday after the match, Neil Lennon confirmed that his Dunfermline Athletic side was the Championship club that had shown interest in taking Osmand on loan earlier this season.
The former Celtic boss said live on Premier Sports:
“I was a wee bit interested in wanting to take him on loan, but he backed himself to be in the squad.”
And it’s fair to say that decision has paid off in style.
Osmand, 19, was handed his big chance under Martin O’Neill, coming off the bench in extra time to score the decisive goal in Celtic’s 3-1 League Cup semi-final win over Rangers at Hampden.
Just weeks ago, he was turning out for the B team, struggling to break into Brendan Rodgers’ first-team plans before the managerial shake-up.
Now, after a stunning introduction on one of the biggest stages, he’s gone from fringe prospect to fan favourite almost overnight.
Lennon’s comments add another layer to the story. Osmand backed himself to stay, fight and earn his chance. And under O’Neill, he’s done exactly that.
