NEIL LENNON has explained Leigh Griffiths’ continued absence from the Celtic match-day squad with many supporters hopeful they would see him on the bench at least before the international break.

The player has been recovering from an injury but before that there was real concerns around his general fitness and Neil Lennon has reiterated Leigh has still got a bit to go before he can bring him into the first team fold.

Leigh has not played regular first team football in a year at this point with his long lay off due to personal problems taking up the second half of last season. His return to the squad was welcomed at the start of the season but he couldn’t keep the momentum going and an injury curtailed his comeback.

The international break will now come into play and with that, Neil Lennon has challenged his striker to get up to speed.

“We’re hoping to give him two good weeks of work, then he has a developmental game next week – see how he comes through that.” Lennon told CelticTV

“We want him up to speed, he’s not up to speed, not at the level that we want him at, he’s got to do the work in the next two weeks.”

Hopefully we see Leigh back scoring goals after this last international break of 2019.
