NEIL LENNON has hit back at Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas after he had a go at Leigh Griffiths for celebrating his goal at Firhill by putting his fingers in his ears.

The striker got his first goal since August, and in between that time and now there’s been all sorts of suggestions the players time at Celtic is up. Scoring the goal and putting his fingers to his ears was the frontman telling the world he’s blocking out the negativity.

Charlie Nicholas said it’s something the player shouldn’t have done and that he’s creating his own agenda. Quite ironic Charlie would accuse anyone of creating their own narrative.

When asked to comment on Nicholas and his critique of Leigh – Neil Lennon was rightfully defending his player.

“Why did he put his fingers in his ears? It is not about a war or creating a so-called agenda. It is about getting himself right as a person – and if he does that, he can become the player he once was.” Lennon told RecordSport.

He said: “I was just happy to see him scoring. That’s the main thing, far more than the nature of his celebrations.

“Of course Leigh wants to silence his critics. He’s a wee street fighter. He’s got the rascal, a bit of the Devil, in him at times – but I like that.

“But he certainly knows how to play centre forward. There’s a quietness about him now and he just wants to get on with his business.”

Leigh will likely be in the squad for the Kilmarnock game on Wednesday evening. No word yet whether he’ll start or not.
