NEIL LENNON has revealed it was both he and Dermot Desmond who decided to bring in a sports psychologist after the Champions League exit to Ferencvaros.

It speaks to a bigger picture the majority shareholder and the manager don’t believe the responsibility lies with the leaders at our club. Given this wasn’t our first Champions League exit at the hands of a team with a much smaller budget, the decision to bring in a psychologist seems like a massive deflection and an unwillingness to address the fundamental issues.

Don’t get me wrong, the club should get kudos for looking after their players mental health in general, especially at this time when we’re all struggling but to use in reaction a defeat shows a real lack of self-awareness.

Speaking ahead of their dead rubber tonight, Lennon confirmed it was Dermot who agreed a sports psychologist was needed and the manager explained the setup.

“A psychologist comes in two times a month.” Lennon Confirmed to RecordSport.

“The players have been having individual conference calls as well.

“They’ve been working away on a one-to-one basis at times.

“You just don’t know with some players, some of them are very private individuals who don’t give too much away.

“There’s just a bit of anxiety in their play. If anything they are trying too hard.

“They need to try to relax a bit more and play their natural game. Uncertainty can have and affect on players, no doubt about it.”

Celtic have only qualified for the Champions League four times out of the last twelve, there’s much more at play than mental blocks.
