Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon thinks Celtic refusing to change their tactical set-up during last night’s humbling defeat to Borussia Dortmund was insane despite continually shipping goals.
The Hoops were thrashed in Germany as Bundesliga giants Dortmund put seven past them in an evening to forget.
Emre Can, Karim Adeyemi, Serhou Guirassy, and Felix Nmecha all scored as Celtic fell to a hapless defeat.
The Bhoys looked spooked and were second to everything from the off.
Their tactical approach to the game was wrong as Dortmund continually beat their press, overran their non-existent midfield, and broke the defensive line with ease.
Every Celtic error was pounced upon, too, with the Scottish Premiership champions denied any minute’s rest.
Unlike some of his predecessors, boss Brendan Rodgers has yet to crack the code on the European stage.
Despite limited resources and a fraction of their opponents’ budgets, Gordon Strachan and Neil Lennon got Celtic playing in a manner that made them competitive against bigger sides.
Lennon, who masterminded a memorable 2-1 win over Barcelona in 2012, was critical of Celtic’s tactical approach last night.
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome,” he said (live on air on TNT Sports).
“[Celtic are] playing the same short football and getting done for it. Doing that at this level, you can’t.
“This is a real tough watch.”
One can’t help but feel that Celtic’s approach to games like last night’s needs to change.
Leaving themselves exposed against top-quality opposition is ineffective and almost asking for a thumping.
Boss Rodgers has a lot to digest after yesterday evening, but he needs to ensure these embarrassing hammerings become a thing of the past.
