IT caused some commotion and had we wanted to pay attention we could have seen Brendan Rodgers slowly working his ticket out of Celtic when he declared he had nothing to do with this particular transfer.
News broke in late January the club were closing in on a very talented winger named Maryan Shved from Ukraine. When asked about the deal, Rodgers was flippant and declared he had ‘one thousand’ wingers at the club.
The manager then backtracked before the signing was made official.
Shved signed for the club, came to Glasgow to finish the details and headed back to Karpaty Lviv until the summer.
The deal seemed pretty straight forward but according to the Ukrainian club, the move was hopefully the birth of a partnership between the two clubs which will see talent potentially going both ways. Karpaty claiming they rejected a larger offer from a ‘big European club’ so Shved could make the move to Celtic and be the foundation for the partnership.
“The truth is we could have got more money by selling Maryan to another club. We had official offers from three clubs and the biggest bid was from a club that offered £500,000 more than Celtic. A big European club.” Said club Director, Oleg Smaliychuk.
“Despite the speculation, Dynamo Kiev did not make an offer. But I believe the player deserves the right to choose his career and nobody forced him into accepting the bigger offer. In the end, he told us he wanted to move to Celtic. And we were happy to conclude the transfer, even if we could have earned more money.”
Shved looks a real prospect and will be a gem for whoever will be the Celtic manager come pre-season.
As for the partnership, the more footholds the bhoys can get in different countries the better our scouting network would be.
So you have to wonder, who actually signed this player ? Was Congerton involved ?
