At the start of the transfer window, talk around Niko Sigur ramped up quickly, with reports suggesting a deal with Celtic was close.
Some even claimed that an agreement was on the verge of completion. However, those suggestions were premature.
CeltsAreHere were quick to shut down the rumours at the time, reporting that, while Celtic do hold an interest in the Croatian-born Canadian midfielder, there was no advanced negotiation, no agreement on personal terms and no deal imminent.
Two weeks later, that remains the case, though the club has continued to monitor Sigur’s situation closely.
And that seems to have been the case, with reports emerging on Friday, re-linking the player to Celtic.
Rangers have also been linked with the player, but it’s now emerged that Sigur would prefer a move to Celtic over Ibrox. That could prove pivotal if either Glasgow side makes a firm move in the coming days.
Speaking on the situation, Mark Hendry confirmed:
“I do believe that Rangers were the other club, or one of the other clubs, that were sniffing around.
“But the player wants a move to Celtic, or at the very least would prefer a move to Celtic, which I’m sure fans will be delighted to hear.
“It’s just now about the hierarchy getting around the table with the representation or Hajduk Split contacts that they’ve got and trying to get something done.
“He’s definitely one to keep an eye on.”
Sigur remains a player Celtic are watching, but for now, interest hasn’t yet turned into action.
Celtic have just a week left of the January transfer window, once this weekend is over.
It is extended past the 31st of the month, as has been the case over the past few years. The window in Scotland closes on Monday, 2nd February at 11 pm. By that time, Celtic will hopefully have at least three new faces to add to the two already signed.
