Former Celtic defender Johan Mjallby has poured cold water on the speculation linking Kyogo Furuhashi with a January move away from the club, insisting there is “no chance” the Japanese striker will leave during this crucial part of the season.
Kyogo has been linked with a potential £9.5 million move to MLS side Atlanta United, sparking concerns among fans about losing their talismanic forward. However, speaking about the rumours, Mjallby made it clear he believes Celtic will hold on to their key players as they aim for both domestic and European success.
Mjallby highlighted the significance of Celtic’s upcoming Champions League clash with Young Boys, where a positive result should see Brendan Rodgers’ side progress to the knockout stages in the debut of the new format.
Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club, Mjallby said:
“No, they won’t, there is no chance. This Young Boys game is going to be massive for the club.
“For the aspirations from the manager as well. He really wants to do well in Europe and they have a golden opportunity to get through, which is going to be massive for the club and everyone being a part of it. The league is already there. They have already won the title. Everything is looking rosy, good and great for them.
“Looking forward, are they going to look for players? Yeah, they always look for players. But I am not too sure nothing major is going to happen in this window, regarding Celtic.”
Kyogo remains a crucial part of Rodgers’ plans, particularly in the absence of form for Adam Idah. The striker has already hit double figures this season, and his ability to deliver in the big moments will be pivotal as Celtic aim to progress in Europe.
Celtic fans will undoubtedly hope that Mjallby’s confidence reflects the club’s intentions to keep hold of their prized asset.
For those who doubted Kyogo, Saturday should serve as a reminder of how important he is to the team.
