Former Celtic hero, Mikael Lustig has given his take on the situation currently engulfing many football leagues in Europe.

The defender, who now played for Gent, is second in the Belgian League but 15 points behind Brugge. But as the football authorities call time on the league due to the pandemic, the Swede has no complaints.

When asked about his position on Scotland’s current situation. Mika was clear, Celtic are thirteen points clear at the top of the table and deserve the title should no more games be played.

He told the Daily Record: “It is not any surprise that I think Celtic deserve to win the league and be named champions.

“I know Celtic would prefer to play the rest of the games and to win the trophy after that but that doesn’t look like it is going to be possible.

“As things stand, Celtic is 13 points clear and they deserve to win the league.

“There are going to be other teams who want the season to be null and void but Celtic are well ahead and deserve to win.

“Hopefully, that will be the final decision and Celtic will be named as Scottish champions again.”

“It is good in Belgium we have a bit of closure.

“Everybody wanted it to be fair for everyone, but at the moment if they declare Celtic champions then the other side of Glasgow are going to say they didn’t deserve it and vice versa.

“It is going to be strange for everyone but unless they somehow find a way to play the games and finish the season, but if they can’t then Celtic have to be named as champions.

“It would be different if they were only a couple of points in front of the team in second place but we are talking about 13 points.

“There is no way even if the season resumed that Celtic would be caught over the remaining games.”

Lustig spent seven trophy-laden years in Glasgow before moving on last summer. He has watched from afar as the bhoys romped home to another league title. The defender knows how much ten in a row means to the support.

As we sit on Friday morning, here is the latest state of play with regards to the SPFL:

There will be a summit held on Monday to discuss the growing concerns in Scottish football and if the league should be called as it stands.

However, UEFA appear to be advising leagues against Belgium’s approach at the minute. [Read More]
