CHRIS SUTTON has heavily criticised Celtic for not getting the job done in Lithuania last Thursday and reckons the manager has a big part to play in Celtic’s current defensive woes.
Using his Daily Record column, the former Celtic striker hasn’t pulled any punches as he discusses Celtic’s current state of play in Europe and their defensive frailties.
“I’m not saying Celtic should have thumped Suduva 10-1 over two legs like we did back in the day. Times and teams have changed but you can’t tell me they shouldn’t have comfortably dealt with such a limited side.
“They still should on Thursday. But how many times can we say it? This defence is not fit for purpose.
“Brendan Rodgers slaughtered his backline after the game but he is as culpable as any of them.”
Brendan Rodgers has had to contend with some very unlucky injuries, suspensions and the odd petulant player since the season has started.
However, it never looked like Celtic were in the market for a centre back until Dedryk Boyata spat the dummy. This could be considered negligibale because even if Boyata was on board, the team could have still have done with a quality centre back.
Celtic go into the last 6 days of the transfer window with it all to do. They hope to bring 2-3 new faces in by the end of play next week but nothing is certain.
He’s not wrong. Our defence gets worse and the others teams get better, it’s whats called levelling the playing field and it’s been coming. We need fresh blood in .
Suttys correct, everybody has to share the blame . Even the fans have to as well. As come on, after a double treble. All the players who have left (for whatever reason??) have not been replaced with better ot equal replacement. So time to vote with your tablets, phone’s, Pc’s and most importantly Your voices. No wait a minute, it may improve, as all the other teams in all Competitions are not spending any cash to improve also. If we believe that we should be fans of sevco. Wake up your being fuc&ed. Can you smell the coffee.
Only when Rangers start beating Celtic will the board sit up and take action. By that time it will be too late. That defence won’t hold out Brechin City let alone Hearts, Hibernian, Aberdeen and Rangers etc. A right confidence boost tomorrow with 7 changes. That will do well for morale. Could be another 2 or 3 points lost. Fans pacemakers will be hyper sensitive everytime a high ball goes into our box that is for sure.
I cannot believe just how casual those who make the decisions to bring in new competent players that will add to the squad not detract from it.
It is scandalous that the club who are on the verge of doing a first ever 10 in a Row are still looking for a decent and competent pair of Centre Backs.
This is just a personal point of view but I don’t give a crap about the Hotel and flashing lights ? I want to be able to stand up and Shout it from the rooftops that MY CLUB Were the Ist Club in these Islands to win the European Cup (when only the Champions of each Country were granted entry) not like the present rubbish.
I want to see My Celtic do 10 in a Row because the way things are going i can never see it being done again.
Time to implement a Sane balance to bring the club forward. HH
It is a bloody joke how they just sally along when we all can see a huge hole in our defence and no one ever comes in to fill it in a game and teams get free shots on our goal.
How come BR and co can not see what they need one holding midfielder and two CHs the fans will start walking soon and all the good work that has been done will be lost and we will become the laughing stock the easy to beat team that no one fears when your at the top you turn the screw tight so there is no way back for no one that is if you want to be top dog…………….
Give the guy a break ok we lost to Hearts and went out of the so called Champions league does anyone seriously believe we can win it when the teams who are NOT Champions are competing on a budget way out of our league .Brendan Rogers deserves the WHOLE Celtic family support that means the board , supporters and players or do we want to go back to people like Barnes ,Brady etc etc I just hope everyone gives him and the team he plays against Sevco their full support and get the good feeling back again after all he has given us great days to far outweigh the bad he needs us as much as we need him.
This is one of the reason Celtic change manager’s so often.. The stress of competion on ever deminishing Budgets has killed Celtic for over fortyfive years. Not that the managers have did their job wrong or incorrect in any way and I have enjoyed all the good reserves that have graced the Hoops for our viewing pleasure. But spend some cash too ya tight cun7s. And start the revolution all over again. To complete, you have to sacrifice more than just your glorlious past. You need very deep pockets when required. You can see what St Brendan can do with the team he inherited. Give him some cash to spend, and let him build a new one.
I agree with your sentiments ira,the failure of the board to REALLY back past managers,ie MON and Lennlon ultimately ended in them walking,they can say MON left due to his wifes health all they like,but it wasn’t long before he was back under the pressures of management again,nah MON new he wasn’t going to get supported by the board to take the team to next level,as ras the case with Lennon.If the board don’t give Rogers what the team needs he will be of this season.The point that is being lost here is,this team,even with the fragile defence defence is still good enough to get 10IAR.It wasn’t that long ago,Hendry and Ajer were being heralded as the future backbone of the team for years to come.Maybe all they need is a John Terry type to help them develop.Lets hope the board release enough of OUR clubs cash for that to happen.
Look our board should give Brendan double what SG got his hands on, so lets give Brendan £20 million this window so he can bring in three or four good pros that help us into the Champions league next season it will be money well spent and when we are bring them in lets show the door to the dead wood lets move out five or six right away.
