Brendan Rodgers has again spoke at length about leaving Celtic so abruptly in February of this year. The Irishman went from hero to villain in the blink of an eye when he walked out on Celtic leaving the support shell shocked.

The love-in between the supporters and their manager came to a crashing halt as the Celtic fans turned on their boss when he walked away from them.

The banner at the following game would read ‘You traded immortality for mediocrity, never a Celt, always a fraud’.The sheer backlash of the anger took Rodgers by surprise and he’s spent a few interviews now trying to explain himself and his rational for leaving when he did.

Many supporters say the same thing, if he had left in the summer having bagged another treble he would have gone down in Celtic folklore without a seconds hesitation. The blemish to his name will be he walked out on the club.

Speaking in an exclusive interview cited by RecordSport the former Celtic manager explains himself again and in more depth. Feeling vindicated the extra time he took in the final three months of the season led him to the great position he finds himself with Leicester at the moment.

However, he will have upset the apple cart with some of the Leicester faithful when he openly admits Celtic are bigger than his current club.

“But, because of how quickly it happened, it was probably difficult for some people to accept. But we’ve both moved on since then. Celtic moved on and won the treble which was brilliant. Three trebles consecutively which is incredible.

“And I was able to come into Leicester and assess players while they were under pressure because that’s when you can really make judgements. I felt it would give me those last 10 or 11 games of the season to assess what Leicester had and what needed to be done.

“It gave me the time to prepare for the summer so that we were ready to make a challenge at the start of this season. I think it’s worked out well for both parties.”

“Of course, Leicester is not as a big a club as Celtic. But the challenge here is trying to break into the elite down here. That’s the big challenge.

“When I went to Celtic they had just lost a Scottish Cup semi final to Rangers who were coming up into the Premiership. The challenge for me was, could we then win and win in a better way and obviously get the supporters back on side. That was the challenge that attracted me.

“So at Leicester the challenge was different. They had finished 9th in the table the season before but they had ambitions to try to challenge. They had spent £100m on a new training ground and assembled a good squad of young players with the potential to improve. I felt that was a really good challenge to take on.”

  1. Until Br came Celtic were a lost cause in all European campagns. He proved that with or without him they still are. But the investment was Fuc&ing nothing before Br and has improved since. Hope this continues under Neil Lennon.
