Celtic’s transfer business has taken another unexpected turn, with Danish midfielder Oliver Sørensen reportedly undergoing a medical ahead of a move to Parkhead.
Danish outlet Tipsbladet reports that the 24-year-old is set to join Celtic on loan from Parma, with the Scottish champions also securing an option to make the transfer permanent.
It is a deal that has appeared almost completely out of nowhere.
Sørensen only moved to Parma from FC Midtjylland last summer in a deal worth around €8 million, but his first season in Italy has not quite gone as planned. He made 36 appearances for the Serie A club, scoring once and providing one assist.
Predominantly a central midfielder, Sørensen can also operate from the left and would give Martin O’Neill another option in an area of the squad that could look very different by the time the Scottish transfer window shuts at 5pm on Thursday.
The Danish report claims the midfielder is already undergoing his Celtic medical ahead of the proposed loan.
There is certainly room opening up.
Celtsarehere understands Reo Hatate could leave Celtic before Thursday’s deadline, while Arne Engels has already completed his £22 million move to West Ham and Bernardo went out on loan.
What makes this latest development particularly interesting, though, is everything else happening around Celtic’s midfield.
A £3.4 million deal is already understood to have been agreed for PSV Eindhoven youngster Joel van den Berg, with the Netherlands Under-19 international due to complete his move.
At the same time, reports in Italy now claim Celtic have returned with a fresh substantial offer for Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis, a player the club have tracked throughout the summer. (The Scottish Sun)
So, are Celtic really preparing to bring in Sørensen, Van den Berg and Gineitis within the space of a few days?
It would represent a major overhaul of O’Neill’s midfield options and perhaps suggest further departures are coming.
Equally, Celtic may simply be working on several deals at once before deciding which ones they can actually get over the line. At this stage of the window, clubs cannot afford to work through targets one at a time.
The certainty of the reporting around Sørensen makes this one particularly difficult to ignore, especially with a medical said to be taking place.
Things are now moving quickly around Celtic Park, and with Thursday’s Scottish deadline approaching, there could be considerably more business to come.
