Opinion: Celtic Should Turn to Unlikely Source to Solve Major Issue

Celtic’s goalkeeping issues are nothing more than shambolic, all three keepers used last season are simply not good enough. Barkas was brought in to be Celtic’s number one, but poor performances saw Scott Bain and Conor Hazard have their runs in the team. Like Barkas, both failed to impress. Fans were crying out for Barkas to be reinstated as Celtic’s first-choice keeper due to his price tag.

Many, like me, believed a run in the team would see the Greek keeper build his confidence and aid him to demonstrate why the best part of £5 million was splashed on him. After pulling off good saves against Preston, many thought the Greek international had turned a corner and was ready to step up to the challenge, but mistakes against Midtjylland and West Ham have left fans expecting a new signing for between the sticks.

However, a new signing can not be made instantly therefore, Celtic should turn to someone already on their books for the time being.

Doohan featured five times for Ross County while on loan at Dingwall but was recalled after being surprisingly dropped. He was then the subject of an emergency loan which seen him head to Tayside where he played a couple of times at the tail end of last season. Previous to this Doohan spent two seasons with Ayr United, picking up a young player of the year award due to coming in touching distance of breaking the club record for successive clean sheets.

Speaking to an Ayr fan, he questioned me as to why Doohan was not given the chance at Celtic, especially in the crisis we find ourselves in.

To add to this, Doohan has featured in international tournaments for the Scottish youth teams, making him slightly more experienced than Conor Hazzard.

The 23-year-old may not be a long term answer to Celtic’s problems but the Scotsman should be throwing his hat in the ring for a chance in the Hoops.
